Types of Loft Conversions

Our professional team of highly skilled carpenters have many years of experience. We have been completing loft conversions since 2003 for homes across West Sussex and East Sussex. We have built a reputation for excellence by delivering all projects efficiently and within budget.

  • Velux Conversion - The most affordable conversion. Limited to within the roof line allowing large amounts of natural light into the room.
  • Hip to Gable - This type of conversion usually applies to a semi-detached or end terrace property. We alter the roof slope to increase space and construct a dormer at the rear of the property. This conversion offers the possibility of creating vast amounts of additional space.
  • Dormer - The best way of maximising the loft space you currently have available. Dormer conversions create a large amount of space and provide the best option for head height.
  • Pitched Roof Dormer Conversion - This is the most aesthetically appealing loft conversion for the exterior of your property. It features a sloped roof and blends with your existing roofline. It is the perfect conversion for properties in conservation areas or houses that need to retain character.

Do I need planning permission for my loft conversion in Sussex?

A loft conversion is considered to be a permitted development and not require planning permission provided certain limits and conditions are met.

  1. To be permitted development, any additional roof space created cannot exceed
    • 40 cubic metres for terraced houses
    • 50 cubic metres for detached and semi-detached houses
    • You must include any previous roof space additions within this volume allowance. Although you may not have created additional space, a previous owner may have done so.*
  1. On the principal elevation of the house (where it fronts a highway), it must not extend beyond the existing roof slope. This is would classify as NOT permitted development.*
  2. Materials are to be similar in appearance to the existing house.*
  3. No part of the extension is to be higher than the highest part of the existing roof.*
  4. Verandas, balconies or raised platforms are NOT permitted development.*
  5. Any side-facing windows must be obscure glazed and installed with opening parts more than 1.7 metres above the floor of the room.*
  6. Roof extensions, apart from hip to gable ones, to be set back, as far as is practicable, at least 20cm from the original eaves. We use the roof plane to measure the 20cm distance. The enlargement cannot overhang the outer face of the wall of the original house.*
  7. You need to consider protected species, like bats, when planning work of this type. A survey may be needed, and if bats are using the building, a licence may be required.*

*Information taken from the planning portal and is accurate as of 16.3.24

Advantages of a Loft Conversion Over Moving Home

Increase the floor area of your home
Whether you need more bedrooms or a new home office, a loft conversion is a great way to achieve this. Most people don’t realise the potential of all the space available in their lofts. This topped with great views makes converting your loft the ideal choice for unlocking your homes full potential.

A cost effective way of adding value to your home
By adding additional bedrooms, bathrooms or even living spaces, you can dramatically increase the overall value of your home. Along with making your home more attractive to buyers, this makes a loft conversion a cost-effective investment.

Additional storage solutions
When we convert loft spaces, we often encounter awkward areas because of the nature of sloped roofing. We are able to offer bespoke storage solutions that maximise these areas and make the most out of your space.

Make your home fit for purpose
We understand that sometimes life circumstances change and as a result their homes need to adapt. Loft conversions offer a vast amount of additional floor area that we can use to tailor your home to your needs.

Bespoke designs
By designing your own loft conversion you are able to create the design you want. We generally find even when our clients purchase a new home they always like to put their own stamp on it. By getting involved in the design process, we can tailor your conversion to your needs and requirements from start to finish.

Save on moving costs
The associated fees involved in moving house can quickly mount up. By investing in your property, you can spend more time enjoying your home and less time worrying about the next option.
